HISTORY of PALESE and SANTO SPIRITO

HISTORY of PALESE

The first urban nucleus of Palese arises when, in the second half of the seventeenth century., Spreads the practice of granting land in perpetual lease. Plots of land to cultivate are granted by the owners (or ecclesiastical bodies landowners residing in the municipalities of Bito, and Bari Modugno) in favor of the settlers and farmers natives of neighboring countries. In the face of someone else's right to enjoy and embrace the fruits, the settlers undertake any obligation to make improvements to agricultural land and to the owner, for a specified period, a periodic rental represented by a sum of money or a part of the production. Over time, having the ability to pay, the settlers begin to redeem the land and to settle permanently on it.
From 1811, the township, for the most part consisting of typical rustic dwellings with walls of dry stone shaped trulli (pagliare) or in the shape of inverted earthenware pot (grastudde), and indicated by the name of Marina Village Reunited or Modugno, took the name of Palese. With this name is, in fact, officially known as the location, that by Royal Decree, signed by Gioacchino Napoleone (Murat), King of the Two Sicilies, is subject to the judicial district of the District of Modugno. In 1928 the territory of Palese, bounded to the west by way Capitaneo and east by Modugno away from Via Duca d'Aosta and the stradella Mangialardo, coincident, for the most part, with the former territory declared "promiscuous" as early as 1511 by Isabella of Aragon, Duchess of Bari, in order to allow the release to the sea to the town of Modugno, administratively passes from this to that of Bari, which already belongs to the territory of spots.
The township is consolidated on an axis defined by the current main road Corso Vittorio Emanuele (internal parallel of the ancient Via Resort) around the "polarity" such as the Portico of Papapicco at Capitaneo Palace, the ancient church, the present rectory. Perpendicular to this axis are developed, according to a precise metrical scansion (multiples of the centurions?), Dozens of alleys that, in some cases, become roads towards the sea or towards the country and in others, remain dead ends in a structure to " comb ". In fact, right at the intersection of Corso Vittorio Emanuele with some major arteries (via Modugno, via Tower Brencola) develop specific nodes of architectural significance.

Santo Spirito

The urban nucleus of Santo Spirito rises when in the first half of 1800 the old "locus Sancti Spiritus," for centuries belonging to a Benefit Chamber of Royal Patronage for the most part, is divided up and given in subenfiteusi. Agricultural land is freed, it will start the private building, stands the church dedicated to Santo Spirito nd build patrician villas belonging to the noble classes and the rich bourgeoisie Bitonto. The resort of Santospirito, inserted nell'ager Butuntinus, it is well known since Roman times, it was crossed by the Via Traiana and comfort because the seat of a small port used by inland cities to the coast for export of its agricultural products, as evidenced by the presence of a wreck of a Roman ship, loaded with amphorae, in the waters off the former "Tower of Finance." The coast was also the point of supply of water for the sailors, given the presence of many sources of spring water. The geographer and cartographer Arab Idrisi, who lived in the second half of the twelfth century, indicates the cove by the name of "burg. Gilu, although it is said that '. silu "(tower silos). In 1928 the territory of Santospirito for centuries belonging to the municipality of Bito, he joined the City of Bari

ORIGIN OF NAMES
Between myth, legend and history

MANIFEST

- In the deeds preserved in the Archives of the Basilica of San Nicola and that of the Cathedral of Bari are indicated, around the eleventh century, a place called Palizzo that you think may indicate, with considerable probability, and historical foundation, that of Palese. According to the scholar V. A. Melchior, who first gives such a case, the name of the name originates from the presence in the fences or wooden fences (lat. palitium), erected in defense of rural houses and flocks. Based on a research carried out by the local historian Vito Ricci, the oldest indication of that name dates back to 1048. The reference to such locations is present in the acts of Cadastre of Bari in the years and in later centuries with variations similar to each other (Paliczio, Palisco, Paliso, Palieso).

- The jurisdiction of the Bishop of Giovinazzo is present in medieval times, around 1100, a hamlet named Puzillum. The student identifies Lozito Vito in this house the future urban core and the name Palese.

- Near Palace Capitaneo can still see a building with arches called Portico of Papapiccolo, used in the seventeenth century as a place of rest for travelers and shepherds. Such a "millstone", according to local historian Leonardo Del Turkish, is run by an unknown host, a native of Palo del Colle, nicknamed "the Palese." Which he could derive the name.

- In the General Cadastre Modugno year 1752 is present in the area of the square Capitaneo, a Tower Palese, sixteenth, so called because, placed on high ground, is visible from the surrounding area. The origin of the name may derive Palese, according to some local scholars and Modugno (Potenza, Milan and others), from the name of this tower, mentioned, however, even in the Atlas Rizzi Zannoni 1807.

- On the rock that juts out into the sea called La Punta archaeological excavations carried out in 1987, directed by Dr. F. Radina, have testified to the presence of human settlements, as already suggested by the research of Prof. Masellis of 1964, to the Neolithic period (6000 BC.). The remains indicate the presence of the foundations of a solid stone building on the rock suggest that the structure was of considerable importance.
One could speculate that it is, given its orientation in the east-west direction, to a place of worship, perhaps a small temple dedicated to a deity in ancient rural pre-Roman times, the goddess Pale, protector of herds and shepherds . The name of this deity (lat. Pal, Pales) could be associated to Palese. Even in the 70s of last century it was easy to see that before shearing the flocks were conducted at the end of the rock and pushed into the water to be washed, almost a rite of purification as was the case during the Palilie, Roman festival dedicated to the goddess.

- A poem in the vernacular of the poet Peter palesino Palasciano refers to an unlikely mythical origin of the name linked to a tragic love between Jupiter and a young girl by the name of the place Palese.

Santo Spirito

- The scholar Lozito Vito believes that to give the name to the locality has not been the presence in the area of a church dedicated to Santo Spirito  but instead, it was the "locus" "Sancti Spiritus", a name already existing in ancient times and amounted to the first time in a document of 1261.

- In the first half of 1700 you have certain knowledge that the ancient church located in the territory of Santo Spirito near the sea", of which you do not know the dedication, there is a painting of the Holy Spirit, though a story regarding S . Francis refers to the presence, at the time of the saint, a "chieusola" dedicated to Santo Spirito and located near the Castle of Argiro (formerly Castle Saracino) located at the western end of the harbor, of which the remains are still visible within the existing homes.
