LA PUNTA IN PALESE - BARI

The rock that juts out into the sea adjacent to the bathhouse "The Bay", called "La Punta", contains one of the oldest archaeological sites in the territory of Palese.
It dates back to the Neolithic period.

An excavation campaign carried out in 1987, directed by Dr. F. Radina, testified the presence of the last piece of a human settlement dating back to a period older than that used by the research of Prof. Masellis of 1964, which identified a prehistoric village dating back to 3000 BC in the area immediately upstream and in the adjacent area of "The Title".

The remains of a solid foundation of existing stone on the cliff, with a width of m.1, 80, suggest that the wall structure built on the same, although its function is still unknown, however, was, in size and technique, of considerable importance , reflecting the presence of a highly evolved civilization dating back to 8000 years ago, suddenly disappeared.

A small bowl of purified clay miniature greenish - like "Serra d'Alto" - along with other fragments of pottery of the same type and kind of "Diana", found during excavations, might be indicative of the different phases of use of ' settlement, ranging from the most ancient and most recently that of the Neolithic period.

At the end of the excavations, which affected only a part of the rock, the archaeological finds have been covered by a layer of soil to protect the same,, waiting for further studies and to enable their future development.

Only a lucky intervention in 2008, meanwhile, has prevented the excavation of the same, having been designed and started on the rock, ignoring the presence of the site, public works to level in order to use as a possible area for bathing.

Additional tests archeological are still made at the beginning of 2013 in the area immediately upstream of the reef and adjacent to it, across the street, in a area where it had been, meanwhile, questioned the relative bond of protection.
It is believed that this research, together with the archaeological discoveries made, recently, in Bosnia, in Kisovo, will most likely provide us with certain information related to that very advanced civilization that was present around 8,000 years ago, also on the coast palesino, then disappear.

The existence of branches, roots and leaves fossilized in the rock, visible in the most tampered with the small promontory of "La Punta", suggesting that the entire coastal area, which is still characterized by the presence of the spring waters that flow through the fissures of the stratified rocks of the coast, the so-called "water of Christ", was once covered by thick vegetation.

Old local stories, myth and legends tell us that the rock, in ancient times, was an important place of worship, where there was a temple dedicated to a deity rural pre-Roman times, the goddess Pale, protector of herds and shepherds.

The orientation of the building structure discovery, which is in the east-west direction, which is typical of the temples, it could also endorse this hypothesis.
Even in the 70s of last century it was easy to see that, before the time of shearing, the flocks of local shepherds were conducted annually at the end of the rock and, following the ram, which was pushed into the water and, then, swimming reached the shore, were washed, almost an ancient purification ritual, as was the case during the Palilie, the ancient Roman festival dedicated to the goddess on 21 April.
The name of this deity (lat. Pal, Pales) is, with a lot of imagination, associated with the name of Palese.

A tragic incident took place on July 17 of 1954 in the area immediately in front of the webiste, where numerous pottery shards came out of the ground ..
In a sandy soil left abandoned, as, however, was that of 'entire band that came from the waterfront up to the National road, three boys died, suffocated in a small tunnel, collapsed suddenly, they had dug to play hunting the treasure.

For John Pistorio, 13 years old, Rocco Chiusolo, aged 15, Renato Andreatini, 11 years old, "the land was for them to play and death."
